Christmas: DIY Kids’ Ornaments

A tree-trimming party is a time-honored way to get families and friends together during the holidays (and get your tree decorated in the process!). But because kids and fragile ornaments can be a tricky combination, we put together this fun idea for an ornament craft table to keep children busy and happy.

Kid's-Ornament-Kits

Set up a craft table with a few samples of finished ornaments you’ve already made so kids can get an idea of what they’re going to create. Our craft table also included washable paint-dot paint markers, glitter, extra pom-poms, and extra popsicle sticks so kids could also experiment with their own creations.Craft-Table To make it easier and safer for kids, we advise doing the star, tree, and reindeer ornaments’ initial glue-gun assembly yourself and then pre-packaging little ornament kits so kids have everything they need to start crafting. That way, you can stow the hot-glue gun out of reach of little hands well before kids arrive. At the party, just pass out ornament kits to your younger guests and let them get to work!

Here’s how to put together each kit:

STAR KIT

Star-Kit

  • Hot-glue gun
  • 5 popsicle sticks
  • 6″ of decorative ribbon
  • White card stock
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • 6 gold pipe cleaners
  • 12 white mini craft pom-poms
  • Treat bag
  • Double-sided tape
  1. Hot-glue the popsicle sticks into a star shape. Tip: Start with a narrow “V” shape and build upon it.
  2. Glue ribbon to the back of star.
  3. Cut card stock in a strip, cut a notch in one end, and write “STAR KIT” on that side.
  4. Place pipe cleaners and pom-poms inside treat bag.
  5. Fold top of bag down and seal using handmade card stock label secured with double-sided tape.

REINDEER KIT

Reindeer-Kit

  • Hot-glue gun
  • 3 popsicle sticks
  • 6″ of decorative ribbon
  • 2 brown pipe cleaners
  • White card stock
  • Pen
  • 1 sheet of tan felt
  • 2 googly eyes
  • 1 mini red craft pom-pom
  • Treat bag
  • Double-sided tape
  1. Hot-glue popsicle sticks into a triangle shape.
  2. Hot-glue decorative ribbon on the back in the middle of one of the triangle’s sides.
  3. Cut two 2 1/2″ pieces of brown pipe cleaner (for the reindeer’s antlers).
  4. Fold one brown pipe cleaner in half.
  5. Trace around the popsicle stick triangle on the felt, then cut to size.
  6. Cut card stock in a strip, cut a notch in one end, and write “REINDEER KIT” on that side.
  7. Place pipe cleaners, felt, googly eyes, and pom-pom in treat bag.
  8. Fold top of bag down and seal using handmade card stock label secured with double-sided tape.

To help kids create antlers: Wrap the folded brown pipe cleaner around the side of triangle where the ribbon is glued. Wrap each half around popsicle stick in opposite directions, leaving 2″ pieces sticking up unwrapped, and bend each top to the side. Wrap each 2 1/2″ piece of pipe cleaner once around each bend to create antlers.

TREE KIT

Tree-Kit

  • Hot-glue gun
  • 5 large popsicle sticks
  • 6″ decorative ribbon
  • 2 mini green craft pom-poms
  • 2 mini red craft pom-poms
  • 2 mini white craft pom-poms
  • 1 small gold craft pom-pom
  • 1 gold pipe cleaner
  • White card stock
  • Pen
  • Treat bag
  • Double-sided tape
  1. Hot-glue popsicle sticks together, one on top of the other, fanning out.
  2. Hot-glue decorative ribbon on the back of the tree top.
  3. Cut card stock in a strip, cut a notch in one end, and write “TREE KIT” on that side.
  4. Place pom-poms and pipe cleaner in treat bag.
  5. Fold top of bag down and seal using handmade card stock label secured with double-sided tape.

Kids can put the ornaments together with washable glue (we like Elmer’s Board Mate Dual Tip Glue Pen – it has a large applicator side for glitter application as well as a fine-tip side for affixing mini pom-poms). Then let them hang their finished ornaments on the tree!

Elmer's-Glue-PenFor easy clean-up, protect your craft table with heavy paper or cloth (we like Scotts Fabric Drop Cloth), and keep a pack of wet towelettes (such as Huggies wet wipes) on hand to help with sticky fingers.

Invite guests over with one of our holiday Evite invitations. Just make hot chocolate and cookies, put on a playlist of Christmas cheer, sit the kids down at the craft table, and deck the halls! Christmas-Party-Evite-Invitation
