DIY Geometric Piñata by Evite

Materials:

  • 36-inch latex balloon
  • Balloon pump (can find at local party store)
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup waterbase sealer, glue and finish (such as Mod Podge)
  • Newspaper
  • String
  • Painters tape
  • 2 wooden skewers
  • Assorted construction paper
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • 2-inch square punch paper cutter (optional)
  • Candy (optional)
  • Confetti (optional)

Step 1: Inflate balloon with balloon pump, then tie end of balloon to secure.

Step 2: Combine flour, water, and Mod Podge to make papier-mâché paste. Cut newspaper into 2-inch wide strips. Dip newspaper into paste and apply to balloon, making sure to leave a small space around the balloon tie. Allow each layer to dry completely, adding a total of 3 layers.

Step 3: Once the papier-mâché has fully dried, carefully cut off the balloon tie.

Step 4: Fill your piñata with confetti and/or candy. Using painter’s tape and wooden skewers, create an “X”-shaped support to hang your piñata. Tie a long string around the middle of your “X” and place the “X” into the piñata but make sure the remaining string hangs out of the top (this is what you will use to tie your piñata to a ceiling, branch, etc.). Then papier-mâché over the hole (while holding onto the string above the balloon) to complete your piñata.

Step 5: Time to decorate your piñata! We used our square-punch paper cutter to create squares of paper, then cut them in half to create perfect triangles — a huge time-saver. Starting in the middle, hot-glue triangles onto the papier-mâché piñata. We decided to keep it consistent with the following pattern, but feel free to get creative and have fun with it!
