After putting together a fun, colorful paper fan backdrop perfect for a Valentine’s Day party, we created this DIY conversation heart piñata. See how you can make your own below!
- Poster board
- 15″ Styrofoam or floral foam open heart frame (can be found at most floral supply stores and some craft stores)
- Tissue paper
- Hot-glue gun
- Double-sided tape
- White stick-on letters
- Pink marker
- Glue pen
- Fine craft glitter
- Wood skewer
- X-ACTO knife
Step 1: Using your open heart frame, trace two hearts on your poster board and cut them out.
Step 2: Using your X-ACTO knife, cut a 2-inch piece out of the top of your foam heart.
Step 3: Hot-glue one of your heart cut-outs to the back of your foam heart.
Step 4: Make a loop with your twine (this is what you’ll use to string up your piñata), and tie a knot at the end. Spear the knot with the wood skewer and push the skewer, with your knot attached, through the top of your heart and into the center.
Step 5: Hold your knot in place and remove your wood skewer. Then hot-glue the knot to the inside of the heart frame.
Step 6: Hot-glue the front poster-board heart to your frame.
Step 7: Measure the side of your heart frame and cut strips of poster board accordingly (our strips were about 2 inches wide). Then hot-glue strips around the border of your heart frame.
Step 8: When you get to the cut-out part of your frame, glue poster board right up to the opening, then fold over the end of that strip of poster board to create a flap (this will be where you’ll insert the candy).
Step 9: Cut 2-inch wide strips of tissue paper.
Step 10: Cut fringe into the bottom half of your tissue strips (we used fringe scissors, but you can also use regular scissors for this).
Step 11: Using double-sided tape, affix tissue fringe to your heart, starting from the bottom and working your way up.
Step 12: After you finish a small portion, trim the ends so the fringe is flush with the heart shape of your piñata.
Step 13: Color in your desired stick-on letters with pink marker.
Step 14: Color in stick-on letters with a glue pen and sprinkle fine craft glitter on top. Pour excess glitter into trash.
Step 15: Complete fringe detail on your piñata, including the sides. We cut about 2-inch strips of tissue fringe and taped them to our piñata from the bottom to the top, even covering our flap opening.
Step 16: When your tissue fringe detail is complete, peel off stick-on letters and affix to piñata.
