If an end time was indicated on the invitation, guests should plan to leave as close to that time as possible. If no end time was indicated, then guests should expect to take their leave within an hour of the end of the main event. Continuing with the dinner party example, guests would leave within an hour of dessert being served.

Guests should take their cue from their surroundings. If other guests are leaving or the food is being cleared, you should plan on departing within fifteen minutes, unless you have been expressly invited to stay. Even then, make sure the host isn’t simply being gracious.
